Base Building

Out in the open world you can build a base: barricades to wall off ground, doors with locks and keys, and chests that keep their contents when you die. Anyone can try to break in, by force or by picking the lock.

Making build items

Build pieces are inventory items you make, then place. With a hammer in your pack, use plain logs on a steel bar and choose Barricade, Door or Chest, then Make 1 or Make All.

Barricade301 logs + 1 steel bar8
Door303 logs + 3 steel bars25
Chest303 logs + 3 steel bars25
Barricade (tier 2)60a tier 1 barricade + 1 willow logs + 1 mithril bar17
Door or chest (tier 2)60the tier 1 item + 3 willow logs + 3 mithril bars50

Base XP is multiplied by your skilling rate (40× down to 20×), so a barricade gives 160 to 320 Crafting XP.

No Crafting yet? Build items are tradeable, so you can buy them from other players.

Placing

Choose Place on the item in your inventory. It takes no skill and a few seconds of kneeling. Moving or getting attacked stops it, and you can't start while you're in combat.

  • A barricade or chest goes on the tile you're standing on, and you step off it.
  • A door goes on the edge of your tile that you're facing. The side you stood on becomes its inside.

Where you can't build

Towns and starts

Inside Lumbridge, Varrock or Falador, within 25 tiles of a starting spot (those three plus Draynor, Edgeville and Rimmington), the Duel Arena, and anywhere on Tutorial Island.

Teleport landings

Within 10 tiles of any place a teleport lands you, so nobody can wall in an arrival point.

Boss lairs

Within 50 tiles of the King Black Dragon, or 30 of Elvarg or Chronozon.

In the way

Next to a ladder, staircase or trapdoor, on a monster's spawn tile, on dropped items, where someone is standing, or within 2 tiles of another player who's building.

Barricades, doors and chests

Barricade

A crate wall that fills its tile. Stack it up to 3 crates high.

  • 1 crate high blocks walking. 2 or more block arrows and spells too.
  • 3 high has 50% more hitpoints.
  • Add a crate with a hammer in your pack. Tier 1 takes 1 logs and 1 steel bar (Crafting 30). Tier 2 takes those plus 1 willow logs and 1 mithril bar (Crafting 60). A barricade item of the same tier works too.

Door

Opens for you, for anyone holding its key, and for everyone from the inside, so nobody gets locked in.

  • All of your doors and chests share one lock, so one key opens every one of them.
  • Make key gives you a key for free. Change lock moves all your doors and chests to a new lock and crumbles every old key.
  • Only the owner can make keys or change the lock. On a chest, both are under Manage lock.

Chest

Storage that keeps its contents when you die. Up to 3 per account.

  • Opens for you, anyone with its key, or anyone who has just picked its lock. One person can have it open at a time.
  • Tier 1 holds 28 items, tier 2 holds 36.
  • Won't take anything untradeable, such as Player's Souls, Blood Souls or overlevel kits. Keep souls with Father Urhney.
  • Pick up an empty chest to move it.

Keys only survive death inside a chest. They can't go in your deposit box, a key in your pack drops when you die, and a key in your bank goes wherever your bank goes. If your killer gets one, change the lock.

Tier 1 and tier 2

Upgrade a placed tier 1 piece by using willow logs or a mithril bar on it, with a hammer in your pack (Crafting 60). A barricade needs 1 of each per crate; a door or chest needs 3 of each, and only its owner can upgrade it.

Raiding a base

Any player can try to get into any base. There are three ways in.

Break it

  • Choose Attack with melee, ranged, or an autocast spell. Special attacks count as damage.
  • It gives no XP, and arrows you shoot at it are lost.
  • When it breaks, a barricade or door drops some of its materials, private to you for 1 minute. A broken chest spills everything inside for anyone to take, for 5 minutes.
  • An owner who is online is told when a piece is broken or a chest is opened.

Pick the lock

  • Needs a lockpick. General stores sell them for 100 coins.
  • A failed try hurts you (5 or 10 damage, and it can kill) and bends the pick. The 5th failure in a row breaks it.
  • Getting in uses the lockpick up.
  • Your first successful pick of each door or chest gives Thieving XP (base 50 for tier 1, 100 for tier 2). Your own give none.

Take the key

Kill an owner who's carrying their key, and it opens every door and chest they own until they change the lock.

Pick-lock odds

Your chance each try depends on your Thieving, the tier, and the owner's Thieving: up to 60 counts on tier 1 and up to 80 on tier 2. A lock takes the owner's level when it's placed, and again whenever they upgrade the piece or change the lock. It never goes down. Boosts to the raider's Thieving count.

Repairs

By hand

With a hammer in your pack, use the tier's wood on a damaged piece: logs restore 33 HP on tier 1, willow logs 67 HP on tier 2. Noted logs work too. It takes a few seconds and gives no XP.

Chests repair for you

A chest within 10 tiles that holds the right wood repairs damaged pieces on its own, about every 5 seconds: 1 HP per chest on tier 1, 2 HP on tier 2. Up to 3 chests help each piece, and any owner's chests count. Each log buys 33 or 67 HP of repairs.

Walled in by someone else? Attack your way out. If you're boxed in, every hit you make lands for at least 1 damage, and nobody can repair a wall while a trapped player is hitting it.
